Maywood Patient Group (MPG)
Most surgeries have a patient participation group (PPG) and the one at Maywood Surgery is known as the Maywood Patient Group (MPG). As a patient of Maywood Surgery you are automatically a member of the group and can therefore contribute to the development and future of the surgery and the services that it offers. As with most organisations and groups we are governed by a constitution which gives us a framework within which we can operate. This includes having a public Annual General Meeting (AGM) every April to which you are all invited. Look out for the details of these on notices in the surgery, in the community and on the website. We are also members of the National Association for Patient Participation which enables us to keep up to date with what is happening elsewhere in the Country.
Our primary role is helping patients to understand more about various health issues but we also help to raise funds for the Practice and more of this later….. One of the ways that we can help people to understand more about health matters is through the publication of the newsletter which you may have seen when you have visited the surgery. Each newsletter has a particular health focus as well as providing news from the practice and local and National Health services. Much of the medical information contained in the newsletter does not change that often and you may therefore find it useful to look up some of the previous newsletters which are available on the Maywood Surgery website at www.maywoodsurgery.com The medical theme of each newsletter is then the topic discussed at the following Patient Information Evening (PIE) which are usually held at the Surgery in the upstairs meeting room. These are advertised in the surgery itself and on the website and tickets are available from the reception in the weeks leading up to the evening. These evenings include refreshments and comprise of talks, presentations and question and answer sessions led by consultants, doctors, specialist nurses, patients and other experts in the topic being discussed. They are informal and informative events and everyone is welcome.
As mentioned earlier, the patient group also has a role in raising funds for extra equipment for the surgery. There is a fortnightly sales table on Monday mornings where quality used items that have been donated are sold. It is a busy morning and well worth a look. There are also book sale shelves in the waiting room where donations are sold at a very reasonable price and the takings go into the fundraising pot. Please feel free to donate books in good condition or return any that you have bought for other patients to buy. We also have the Maywood Prize Club. It is called a club as there is an annual fee of £20.00 (plus £2.00 for administration) and then there is a monthly draw. Half of the money donated is given away as a prize to a lucky member of the club and the other half is donated to Patient Group funds to be used for the benefit of the surgery. Therefore the more people joining as members of the club, the more money there is for prizes and for the surgery. How is The Money Spent
The Maywood Patient Group has funded a wide range of extra equipment and furniture over the years including the two play areas, the blood pressure machine, waiting room furniture, the outside bench, the phlebotomy room and other more specialist equipment in the consulting rooms. In fact nearly £5,000 is spent on extra equipment and materials each year. Maywood Healthcare of course provides the essentials for its medical work but for more than twelve years now the Maywood patient Group has been helping the practice go that bit further, or buy higher quality equipment. Sometimes we may contribute to something that is much needed in the practice often allowing patients to benefit earlier than would have been possible without the extra funding.
How Does All Of This Happen?
Well, there is a steering committee of nine patient volunteers who meet every four to six weeks to organize all of the above. Maywood’s Business manager regularly attends the committee meetings as does a GP when possible. One of the great strengths of the Maywood Patient Group is the enthusiastic encouragement received from all of the staff at the surgery for which we are very grateful.
